CDC : Salmonella outbreak sickens 388 across U.S.

An outbreak of salmonella food poisoning has made 388 people sick across 42 states, sending 18 percent of them to the hospital.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is trying to trace the source of the outbreak, which began in September. The Department of Agriculture, state health officials and the Food and Drug Administration are also involved.

The CDC said poultry, cheese and eggs are the most common source of this particular strain, known as Salmonella typhimurium.

CDC has been working with state, local, and tribal health departments, the Indian Health Service, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a large, multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul. The outbreak appears to be over. However, CDC and state health departments are continuing to conduct surveillance for cases of infection with the outbreak strain. Public health officials also continue to analyze data gathered during the investigations.

Multiple foods could have been contaminated while growing at adjoining farms. They might have also been tainted by a common water source.The government has expanded its search because people continue to get sick, even after the initial warnings that tomatoes were the source of the salmonella outbreak.
